Record-Breaking Durability: Laser Target Handles 91 kW for One Full Minute.

Colorado Springs, CO – February 27, 2025SemQuest Inc., a leader in laser weapon beam diagnostics, completed a record-breaking high-energy laser (HEL) durability test from February 18 to 21, 2025, at NSWC Dahlgren Division. This test confirmed the performance capability of SemQuest’s laser targets to support Department of Defense (DoD) laser weapon system testing.

During the test, SemQuest’s ALIEN 3k target withstood a sustained 91 kW laser for 60 seconds, setting a new industry benchmark for survivability under extreme conditions. The test campaign included six total targets, featuring two experimental designs and multiple SLIM targets, with the SLIM 5 IR&D target enduring two full-power shots at 50 seconds each with no failures.

“I can’t believe it! Our SLIM 5 IR&D target took two full-power shots at 50 seconds. I thought for sure some kind of failure would result from that much punishment,” said Caleb Hoover, Vice President of Operations at SemQuest Inc.

SemQuest’s CEO and Principal Engineer, David J. Ward, highlighted the significance of the milestone: “This achievement represents a major step forward in ensuring the reliability and effectiveness of laser weapon systems. By demonstrating the durability of our targets under extreme conditions, we are providing critical data and robust solutions that directly support next-generation HEL development.”

SemQuest specializes in developing high-energy laser target boards and advanced hit detection systems designed to provide real-time data for military and defense applications. Their commitment to portability, resilience, and ease of use has positioned the company as a trusted partner for HEL developers and defense organizations worldwide.
